College Application Fee Waived for Texas Students Oct. 13-19

College Application Fee Waived for Texas Students Oct. 13-19

Those wanting to pursue a college education can apply to any Texas public college or university for free during Free College Application Week, Oct. 13-19. The new program was created in the most recent legislative session.

Going forward, Free College Application Week will happen in Texas during the second full week of October each year.

Prospective students must be Texas residents—meaning the student or their parent must live in Texas as their permanent residence for the 12 consecutive months prior to the student’s first college semester—and be applying for undergraduate admission. The application fee is waived for the week as long as students apply through ApplyTexas.org.

The fee will be waived for both prospective first-time college students and transfer students who are Texas residents.

The new state initiative seeks to make it more accessible for more students to begin pursuing higher education by removing one of the cost barriers to higher education. The standard application fee being waived is $75 for most Texas public universities.

Similarly, the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District has sought to make higher education accessible to more students by offering dual credit courses in partnership with Lone Star College-Cy-Fair. Dual credit courses can save students thousands of dollars in tuition, books and fees by taking the courses as part of their high school curriculum.

In addition to its dual credit program, LCISD is a district that prepares students for success in college, a career or the military after high school. LCISD scored above the state average in the most recent 2024-25 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings for students’ college, career and military readiness. The district’s 95% graduation rate for the class of 2024 also exceeds the state average.

LCISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens was named the 2025 Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards in September, building on the school board’s H-E-B Excellence in Education Award recognition as the best school board in Texas.

It’s no surprise, then, that Niche ranks LCISD in the top 15 percent of best school districts in the state as No. 98 out of 876 school districts.
