Lamar CISD Superintendent Named 2025 Superintendent of the Year

Great news for residents and families in Cross Creek West! Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District has been named the 2025 Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards. He’s recognized for his extensive educator experience, efforts to navigate LCISD’s fast growth, and his student-centered approach to leadership.

This honor follows the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award the LCISD school board received in June, being named the best school board in Texas.

About Dr. Nivens

The TASB award has been given since 1984 to public school administrators exemplifying excellence, including having visionary leadership, strong skills, a dedication to education, and a commitment to community involvement.

The LCISD Board of Trustees nominated Nivens as Region 4 Superintendent of the Year, and he was chosen by the Region 4 Education Service Center in June to be among the state’s finalists for the award. Nivens was chosen from among the eight counties and 47 school districts that Region 4 represents in the Houston area.

Nivens has served as LCISD’s superintendent since 2021, bringing three decades of experience in education, including experience as assistant superintendent, principal, teacher, and coach.

Being named the state’s 2025 Superintendent of the Year in September adds to the honors Nivens has previously received in his career, including being named the Region 10 Superintendent of the Year, the National Superintendent of the Year by the National Alliance of Black School Educators, and the 2022 Latino Serving Superintendent of the Year by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.

“Dr. Nivens is a true servant-leader, dedicated to student success, and hes not afraid to roll up his sleeves and do the work to make it happen,” LCISD Board of Trustees President Jacci Hotzel said in a release from the district. He also goes out of his way to listen and get feedback, whether its from trustees, parents, community members, teachers and staff, and our students. Hes strong enough to lead, and humble enough to know he cant go it alone."

LCISD: A Growing School District

LCISD has been recognized as a hypergrowth district, poised to grow from its more than 49,000 students to nearly 70,000 students within a decade. Known for its strong academics and award-winning schools and programs, LCISD has already added approximately 12,000 students in the last four years.

Four of its existing 57 campuses are located less than 5 miles from Johnson Development’s Cross Creek West, including Haygood Elementary that opened in August within the master-planned community. Land is set aside in Cross Creek West to build two more on-site schools by 2027.

A $1.99 billion bond ask has been put on the November 2025 ballot to fund the construction of more schools, including seven new elementary schools and the district’s ninth high school, junior high school and middle school campuses.

With a district growing this rapidly, it’s no surprise LCISD is among the largest employers in Fort Bend County. The latest data from the Texas Education Agency shows LCISD had roughly 4,654 full time employees in the 2022-23 school year.
